METNY’s professional staff and board members are available to lead seminars for local congregations and coordinate multi-congregational gatherings where lay leaders can work to cultivate their leadership skills.

In seminars tailored to each congregation and held at its building, lay leaders can get help in writing a synagogue mission statement. They participate in exercises and discussions on:

  • Programming
  • Fundraising
  • Committee efficiency
  • Leadership skills
  • Membership outreach and retention
  • Volunteer motivation
  • Building an effective board
  • Creating a team of lay and professional leaders

 

Sulam Leadership

In the past, the Sulam name referred to a four-day training program for incoming presidents of USCJ congregations and extended over a Shabbat weekend. Under the new USCJ strategic plan, Sulam has expanded to become the label for a larger, integrated set of leadership development resources, which now also include programs for emerging leaders, current leaders, officers with portfolios (such as membership, fundraising, etc.), as well as new presidents. Leaders climb the ladder (sulam) of sequential programs that build on previous ones.

In the USCJ strategic plan, national consultants, the local kehilla relationship manager (KRM), and lay and staff leaders work together. A KRM will serve about fifty congregations. The KRMs will use our SULAM strategic tool kit to clarify congregational needs, assess readiness, and help synagogues resource the right programs at the right time. They will be champions of communication and provide USCJ with feedback on what is working well and what could be improved.

The new vision for Sulam is accompanied by a new logo. Working with Amy Pollack of Twist n’ Shout, we have developed a consistent branded approach that will be utilized on all of our Sulam materials. The colors chosen for each Sulam program have a natural and bold feel to them. The natural feel reflects the organic phenomenon of growth and change, and bold bespeaks that change requires effort, motivation and persistence.
